Periyar
National Park & National Reserve
The Periyar sanctuary forms part of the high ranges
of the Western Ghats. The dam across the Periyar river has caused the formation
of three large contiguous lakes, the grassy shores of which attract a lot
of wildlife for water, grazing and hunting. The sanctuary is popular for its
boat rides in the lakes and the high visibility of wildlife, especially elephants,
gaur, sambar, wild boar, wild dogs and otters.
Area : 777sq.km.
Season : Throughout the year. Best season Sep-May
Flora : Moist deciduous
Fauna : Elephant, gaur, chital, sambar, crocodile etc.
